There are Folland Gnat owners who do not have a rating and
simply fly with an authorized instructor.

Your level of involvement in the actual flying is only
limited by your level of desire and ability.

You don't even need a pilot's license. Just fly with an instructor.
Jet flying is fundamentally simple, well within the bounds of
the average person.

Operational Restrictions
Performance
Regulatory
In order to fly it solo, you must
obtain a Rating. This  requires:

> pilot's license
> 1,000 hours total time
> instruction from an authorized
    instructor-typically 15 hours if
    you have no jet time
> pass flight test by authorized
  examiner
PLEASE CONSULT  FAA...
regulations for the most complete
current and accurate information,
as regulations change from time
to time.
Long Runway
Take off / landing speed is 120 to
135 knots (138-155mph). The
aircraft's power enables it to take
off in only 1,500 to 2,500 ft of
runway. But, like most military
aircraft, it has no thrust reversers,
thus, for landing,   6,000 ft  is
recommended  if you do not wish
to use the drag chute or wear out
your brakes.

Restricted Altitudes
Like most military aircraft, this
aircraft is not RVSM certified and
thus may not fly between 29 and
41 thousand feet.  It is possible,
however, to obtain an ATC
clearance to  transition from 28 to
42 thousand feet.
The FAA classifies all military
aircraft as "Experimental."  This
imposes certain restrictions which
do not apply to "Normal" aircraft.
Please consult FAA regulations for
the most complete, current and
accurate regulations.    Some of
the most significant of these
restrictions are:

>"Experimental" must  be painted
on the aircraft
> You must send a fax to the FAA
prior to a cross-country flight
> No international flights without
special permission
> airspace restrictions
